ThinApp Helper

Not sure how useful this old app is to people but I noticed it was not available anymore from the developer CIS. Other sites only linked to the original dead website it was linked to an even older dead website.
Finally I found it on some tucked away Chinese site so I thought I'd share it to help keep it alive. I had never used it before so unsure if it's compatible with more recent versions of ThinApp.

The last version was 4.0.3.0

Firefox show more Top Sites

Well I took the plunge and updated to the latest Firefox (59.03) and so far I like it. Only reason I had not changed was because the multirow bookmarks addon was not compatible with the new version of Firefox. Will have to fight with my bookmarks until a good addon is available.

What I did not like though was the Top Sites page and the limit of 12. All that empty space was getting to me. Luckily I stumbled on some help to get more Top Sites showing.
Here's how it's done.

Enter the following into your address bar and hit enter
about:config

You will get a warning so to continue click "I accept the risk"

Scroll down until you find this bit,
browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesCount

Now change the 12 to something you want. I went with 18 for now.
Looks much better than the default 12.

It would be great to add more columns but I have not found a way yet.

Winreducer EX70

After getting Remix OS working on my tiny HP Mini 1004TU I realized it was not going to be an good alternative for it. Remix OS is quite good candy wise but ran horribly on the HP Mini.

I decided to go back to what I had on it, Windows 7 Ultimate, Then I found I never saved the image I created especially for the HP Mini. The SSD is only 8GB so I had reduced the size of the OS by ripping stuff out I did not need. Then the image had been put onto USB as the HP Mini has no optical drive.

I couldn't remember what I had used so ended up just going over all the options. Tried RT7Lite but had problems at the ISO creation stage. Looked at NTlite but found info that there was not much customization. Last I tried Winreducer EX70. What a great piece of software.

Main window

The first attempt was OK apart from some stuff I had taken out was going to cause issues later. The second attempt failed during installation as I had chosen Windows 7 starter and had removed all the Ultimate files. The third attempt I got right. It was a little bigger after installation (Just under 4GB) but I'm happy. Runs super fast even on 1GB of ram.

Options after clicking Start

After every section you will get this. A small price to pay for free software :)

After loading a folder or ISO you will get this window

When this window comes up, make sure to select the correct version you need and if its x86 or 64bit. There's nothing worse than spending ages going over and selecting stuff, making an image and installing to find you picked the wrong version. I learned my lesson about this.

Main widow for the reducing stage

Now this is where all the fun begins. Just be careful what you remove or disable. Lots of programs rely on other programs or multiple services. You need to do some research.
This page might help a little,
https://www.winreducer.net/winreducer-81-database.html

I did find a page in the forum where a member posts what is what but it's for an earlier version of Winreducer. Still helps a bit though.
https://winreducer.forumotion.com/t1663-component-explanations

The Winreducer site seems to have some errors in the HTML as the menus don't always function Here's some links to help you find it all.

The software is on the front page,

See the Forum for help,

GUI themes are here,
https://www.winreducer.net/gui-themes.html

Some Windows themes are here,
https://www.winreducer.net/windows-themes.html

Some tutorials here,
https://www.winreducer.net/tutorials.html

Make sure you read the tips that show when you hover the mouse cursor over an option.
If you take certain stuff out it will break Windows 7!

Have fun!

Floppy Disk Images

The other day I needed a empty floppy disk image. After looking around on the net I discovered I already had a program I use to use years ago.
Its called DiskXS. It's easy to use and I was able to create an empty floppy image with it. I needed a .img file and DiskXS lets you save it to that format.

I won't go into details how to use it. This is the correct URL of the guy who made it as the one in the help and about is wrong.
http://www.alexpage.de/diskxs/

After making the image I needed to load it as a virtual floppy. These days who has a floppy drive?
I used ImDisk Virtual Disk Driver.

It creates an icon in the control panel of Windows so you can configure it there. Its a little tricky getting your head around setting up a drive but there's heaps of help available if you search for it.

Hope some of this info helps you :)

World Machine and Vertex Welds

Sometimes, when I'm using World Machine to make maps for CitiesXL, the image I am working on disappears while I'm building the polygons. My PC is powerful so I guess it's a World Machine issue.
To get around the problem I finish the current polygon and start another knowing I can weld the vertex's together afterwards. When I do this the image shows again.

Just drag one point in the polygon to another and it will weld. Be careful when you do this that your welding the correct points as un-welding them can sometimes make a bit of a mess. I've had points shoot across the screen a few times.

It also comes in handy to allow small bodies of water to exist in the map by making multiple polygons and welding them in a way so the body of water will show. See the image above where I have joined three polygons together at certain points to create a lake.

4shared Premium Trick

I was on 4shared the other day uploading stuff to my account. I have a lot of folders to add so thought I would use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload my folders but... free users can not use FTP! Free users can only upload files and not folders.

I checked out the prices and noticed there was a button saying free for Citrio users. Citrio is a new browser similar to Chrome.

I did not want to install Citrio as I have read a few bad reviews about it so I had a think on how I could use it. I then remembered I still had VMware installed with a Windows 7 PC ready to roll.
I fired it up, downloaded Citrio and installed it. I followed the instructions about adding a link into the address bar and hey presto, my account was changed to premium.

I can not use 4shared on my real PC unless I convert it back to a free account.

For the mean time I can use premium features on my virtual Windows 7 and not worry about any nasty stuff that might be lurking around caused by Citrio. When I have finished uploading all the folders that I need to add, I'll then convert my account back to free and carry on using 4shared in Firefox on my real PC.

If anyone finds this useful, leave a comment :)
